We are Jo and Mark Skerritt, parents to Amelia and Jack. Like many before us, we find ourselves with an empty nest and a desire to explore the world around us, fulfilling travel dreams that we were unable to realise whilst bringing up a family and working full time in demanding careers.
Jo started out working life as a Police Officer before moving into Children's Services in Devon and finally a Housemistress in a Public Girl's School.
Mark spent 37 years in law enforcement, with the Metropolitan Police, National Crime Squad, Serious Organised Crime Agency and National Crime Agency.
We decided to kick work into touch in order to do some long term travelling in 'Frank', our A Class Frankia Motorhome! This has since developed into a decision to change Frank for a new Murvi Morocco, Panel Van Conversion. This will henceforth be known as 'Marcel'! Smaller and more manoeuvrable, but still with everything that we require for relatively long trips.
The post below was first published in Practical Motorhome Magazine on 1 March 2018 under the title 'Frank's For the Memories' You can read it in full HERE
In our twenties we dreamt of owning a campervan and exploring the world. We didn't take the plunge then and were overtaken by marriage, children, mortgages and work!
In 2013 we didn’t know how we wanted to holiday. Our children had both left home, so we decided to hire a campervan to see if we actually enjoyed it. We booked a van conversion and headed off to spend a week in Northern France.
We boarded the ferry, very excited. We weren’t interested in staying on campsites, intending to move every day to experience as many different places as possible. We spent the week in Normandy and were blessed with glorious weather! We stayed on 'Aires' and quickly realised there was a sense of camaraderie and a never ending source of advice from other van owners.
We were seduced by the ability to stay or move on and the excitement of spending time in the evenings planning the next day’s moves. We had discovered 'Motorhome Life' and couldn't now imagine holidaying any other way!
Having learnt what sort of van we wanted (it needed to be bigger than our hired van, with a large lounge and we didn’t want a fixed bed) and so as soon as we got home we started a search for our own van. In April 2014 we stumbled across a ten year old Frankia A Class, with a front lounge and a drop down bed. It was immaculate and we were smitten. We took the plunge and were soon the proud owners of 'Frank'!
‘Frank’ took us on a number of big trips and many short stopovers. We have travelled thousands of miles around Europe, visiting (so far) Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, every trip becoming more confident and adventurous in terms of where we stay. We have become big fans of ‘Aires’ and ‘France Passion’ and more recently ‘wild camping’ in more spectacular and remote locations.
‘Frank’ enabled us to visit friends and family more easily in the UK, and even hosted our Silver Wedding Anniversary with a trip to the Christmas markets in Cologne!
'Frank' was a life changer and inspired us to embark on the travels that we want to document in these pages. And as our motorhoming life developed we decided to invest in a new van - 'Marcel'. We have years of exploring ahead of us!
